Sensei Schuyler Wessels - Sandan

I started my training under Shihan John Adams (5th Dan) in Pullman, WA.  After making Shodan (1st degree black belt) I moved to Seattle where I began training under Sensei Keith Hill (3rd Dan) at the Seattle University Karate Club.  One year later I was graded to Nidan (2nd degree black belt).  Upon moving to Colorado, I founded Greeley Kyokushin in 2006 which later changed to Seiken Kyokushin after moving from Greeley to Fort Collins.  In 2009 myself and Sensei Marta from Satory Dojo were both promoted to Sandan (3rd degree black belt) by Shihan Adams.

I have competed in full contact knockdown style tournaments both locally and internationally.

Kyokushin training is an important aspect in my life and through Seiken Kyokushin Karate it is my hope that I can share this method with as many people as possible.

Senpai Luis Briceno - Nidan

I started my Kyokushin training back in 1994 in Costa Rica under Shihan Antonio Gonzalez. After an extended break from Kyokushin, I resumed my training with Sensei Wessels in Colorado.  I was promoted in Feburary 2009 to a shodan by Shihan John Adams.

I participated in the 2007  North West Kyokushin Challenge where I placed second in the light weight division. I also train Judo at Colorado State University and Behring Jiu-Jitsu (Brazillian JJ) at Z's Training Gym.  I have participated in 2 Judo Tournaments and 1 BJJ Tournament.

Senpai Girish Nair - Shodan

Girish is a world class martial artist from India.  He took 1st place at the 2009 Kyokushin Challenge, beating three black belts in a row.  He tested for Shodan under Kancho Matsushima in 2008.  He also holds a black belt in Shorin Ryu Karate.

Senpai Alfonso Rivera - Shodan

Senpai Alfonso started his training in 1994 under Shihan Antonio Gonzalez in San Jose, Costa Rica. After relocating to Fort Collins, he resumed his training under Sensei Wessels in 2006 (is this right Sky?) and received his Shodan in May of 2011.

Senpai Alfonso enjoys practicing Kyokushin more than anything else, specially Kumite. He never backs away from sparring and will always spar one more round if given the chance. He has two daughters, Adriana and Emma, who he hopes one day be able to pass Kyokushin down to.

Sensei Marta Burns - Sandan

Sensei Marta is the head instructor of Satory Dojo in Denver and also a world champion.  She won the women’s world tournament in Japan in 1998.  She was originally born in Romania, but now lives in Denver with her husband.  Sensei Marta and Sensei Schuyler often hold joint classes both in Denver and Fort Collins.  Click here for more information about Sensei Marta.

Senpai Filip Gibarac - Shodan

My Kyokushinkaikan training began under Senpai (now Sensei 3rd Dan) Schuyler Wessels almost five years ago in Fort Collins, Colorado. Under Sensei Wessels and with the aid of Senpai Briceno as well as my other kohai, I earned the Super Heavyweight Division Champion title in the 2011 Kyokushin Challenge. I look to kyokushin karate as the balancing factor in my life both physically and mentally.

Prior to studying Kyokushinkaikan, I also studied Go Ju Ryu under Kyoshi Thomas Graham (7th Degree). Go Ju Ryu, a father karate of Kyokushin, focuses upon the utilization of hard and soft techniques for self defense, in turn aided in my transition from Go Ju Ryu to Kyokushin, for not much technique was lost.

Senpai Nick Slagel - Shodan

My training with Seiken Kyokushin started in January 2009. That same year I competed in the 2009 Kyokushin Challenge and took 3rd in the Lightweight Division. The last two tournaments I have taken home 1st place and wish to continue advancing in the level of competition.

I enjoy learning new things and Kyokushin Karate has offered me a life time of learning and practicing. Some day I hope to share what I have learned to others to help improve their lives too.
